“A thoughtfully refurbished one-bedroom apartment in Berthold Lubetkin’s landmark modernist building, with west-facing views over a peaceful green space in the heart of central London.”
Set on the second floor of Grade II*-listed Bevin Court, this quietly positioned one-bedroom apartment brings together the architectural character of one of London’s most celebrated modernist buildings with a considered contemporary interior. Refurbished throughout in 2023, the home combines warm materials, practical detailing and an understated palette.
Designed by Berthold Lubetkin with Francis Skinner and Douglas Bailey and completed in 1954, Bevin Court is an important example of post-war social housing. At its heart is a remarkable constructivist staircase, a dramatic piece of architectural choreography, and widely regarded as one of the finest achievements of British modernism. The building’s communal spaces also include a mural by artist Peter Yates, while landscaped gardens and allotments offer residents a welcome connection to the outdoors.
The apartment extends to approximately 500 sq ft, with a practical arrangement that makes thoughtful use of the available space. South-west-facing windows overlook a neighbouring park, drawing afternoon light into the living spaces and creating an unexpectedly tranquil setting for a home in Zone 1.
The 2023 refurbishment introduced a carefully selected material palette, with cork flooring running through the living room and double bedroom, complemented by durable rubber flooring in the hallway and kitchen. Overhead, the original exposed concrete ceilings bring texture and an appealing sense of the building’s history.
The kitchen pairs warm Douglas fir cabinetry with hard-wearing stainless steel worktops, creating a pleasing contrast between natural and industrial materials. Appliances include an integrated fridge-freezer, dishwasher, washing machine, induction hob and oven, all installed as part of the refurbishment.
The bathroom is finished in tile and incorporates a bath with an overhead shower. Heating is included in the monthly rent, and the building benefits from lift access and a secure entry system.
Bevin Court occupies a significant place in London’s architectural history. Lubetkin, one of the leading figures of the British Modern Movement, was responsible for such influential projects as the Finsbury Health Centre and the celebrated penguin pool at London Zoo. At Bevin Court, his belief in the social value of architecture found expression in a building designed to bring generosity, light and a sense of community to everyday living. The building was awarded Grade II* listed status in 1998 and has since undergone various programmes of restoration and preservation.
