Living with Timber: At Home with Benni Allan
Words & Photography by Rob Crawford
Tell us about what this space was like when you found it. You've done a lot of reconfiguring, so it'd be good to get a feel for what was here before.
Tell us about how you approached moving doorways and entrances to borrow light from different spaces.
I'd say that the restrained material palette feeds into that calm atmosphere. Is that something that you carry throughout a lot of your projects?
A lot of the people involved are people that you’ve worked with on multiple projects – the carpentry, for example. How do you approach that collaboration?
And how did you find it, being both the client and the project leader? Did you find the freedom of choice made things easier – or did it become harder to choose which ideas to run with?
You described the space as a gallery where you can bring in objects and pieces from friends and artists. Are there any pieces in particular that you are most fond of? What's the approach to bringing those personal connections into the space?
A lot of your work as a practice is about creating spaces and environments where the objects within them can be celebrated. Can you tell us about the speakers that you designed?
And that connection to music, do you feel like it's something that you'll continue to push further as a practice? You've recently completed an installation at Houghton, can you tell us about that?
